3. PUBLISHED PRIMARY SOURCES
The source texts, all in their original languages, have been published in four volumes, Mary Ward and Her Foundation (Mary Ward und Ihr Grundung) the written sources to 1645 edited by Ursula Dirmeier CJ with introductions and notes in German. (Munster 2007). A set is kept in the Bar Convent archives for the use of researchers. For further information see the TALKS AND DOCUMENTS pages on this website.
Transcripts of Mary Ward's own writings, from the original manuscripts in Munich, are also available for research in the Bar Convent archives. Because of the troubled history of Mary Ward’s institute, including its suppression by Pope Urban VIII by Papal Bull in 1631, and Pope Benedict X1V’s Constitution Quamvis Iusto in 1749, which forbade Mary Ward to be recognised as Foundress, and remained in force until 1909, the original writings of Mary Ward listed below are the only texts which have survived.

Written in Italian, covering the period 1600 to 1609.

Three conferences given by Mary Ward to the Sisters at St Omer 1617 Sometimes known as the “They Are But Women” addresses.
Early plans and outlines for Mary Ward’s institute. c. 1611-1624
Various Papers 1614-1636.
These are spiritual writings, and include Mary Ward’s Retreat notes, resolutions, and some prayers.
